π§π― Beninese Citizenship: the symbolic "return" of thousands of Afro-Brazilians to their origins π§π― βοΈ A growing number of Brazilians have sought citizenship in Benin, a West African country from where millions of enslaved people left for Brazil during the colonial period. The new Beninese law, created in 2024 as a gesture of historical reparation and reconciliation with the African diaspora, allows anyone over 18 years of age, not a citizen of another African country and with a sub-Saharan ancestor deported by the slave trade, to apply for nationality. Many descendants of people enslaved in Brazil resort to DNA testing to fill in gaps left by the destruction of historical records, finding in Beninese citizenship a way to reconstruct their identity and strengthen ties with their origins. βThe process is simple, completely virtual, and can be requested through the official platform upon payment of a fee of US$100, with an analysis period of approximately three months. The measure is also part of Benin's strategy to attract tourists, talent and investors, which is why American singers Ciara and Lauryn Hill were invited to visit the country. The search for citizenship, however, goes beyond the bureaucratic aspect: it represents a symbolic movement of return, cultural affirmation and appreciation of Pan-Africanism, especially in a context in which the memory of slavery was erased or intentionally destroyed throughout Brazilian history.
