Brazil grants permanent residence to foreigners through different types of visas and residence permits, either directly or through transformation of temporary residence.

Overview

Brazil grants permanent residence to foreigners through different types of visas and residence permits, either directly or through transformation of temporary residence. Among the cases of direct granting, for example, are family reunion visas, humanitarian reception; refuge residence permit; investor visa; and the visa for teaching, research or extension activities in the work modality. Furthermore, several categories of temporary residence can be converted into permanent residence as per the agreement for citizens of MERCOSUR member countries; the work visa; one of the investor visa categories; residence for graduates of Brazilian higher education institutions (undergraduate, master's or doctorate); and also the residence granted to border citizens from countries that are not part of or are suspended from MERCOSUR, such as Suriname and French Guiana.
