Brazilian nationality is not always determined automatically.

Overview

Brazilian nationality is not always determined automatically. In certain circumstances, confirmation of the option for Brazilian nationality is mandatory for children of Brazilians born abroad. The following are the cases in which this confirmation must be made to maintain Brazilian citizenship: 1. Automatic Acquisition of Another Nationality: When the child of Brazilian parents born abroad automatically acquires the nationality of another country (by birth or naturalization), he or she must choose Brazilian nationality upon turning 18 to maintain Brazilian citizenship. 2. Consular Registration between June 9, 1994 and September 21, 2007 and Acquisition of Another Nationality: If the child was registered at a Brazilian consular office between June 9, 1994 and September 21, 2007 and, upon reaching 18 years of age, automatically acquired another nationality, he or she must confirm his or her option for Brazilian nationality by the age of 19 to avoid losing Brazilian citizenship.
