Foreigners must prove legal residence in Portugal for at least five years to acquire rights.

Overview

Foreigners must prove legal residence in Portugal for at least five years to acquire rights. A recent change includes the waiting time for regularization, counting from the expression of interest in the residence permit. Unlike a visa, a residence permit allows you to legally stay in the country. Previously, the process could take up to two years, a time that is now considered in the count. To obtain Portuguese nationality by length of residence, it is necessary to reside legally in Portugal for at least five years, be of legal age and not pose a threat to the country. The new legislation also benefits children recognized as minors and majors. These changes will come into effect next semester.
