Overview

If you fell in love with Brazil and want to make this country your true home, becoming a Brazilian citizen can be an important step on this path of belonging. There are different legal ways to obtain naturalization. Ordinary naturalization can be granted to foreigners who have legally resided in Brazil for at least four years. This period may be reduced in cases of marriage with a Brazilian citizen, having a Brazilian child or father/mother, as well as for stateless people recognized by the Brazilian government, who have provided or may provide relevant services to the country, or even who are recommended for their professional, scientific or artistic capacity. Extraordinary naturalization is possible after 15 years of uninterrupted residence. Citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries can also request special naturalization, with simplified requirements, based on the principle of reciprocity. Each path has its own criteria, but they all demonstrate how Brazil generously welcomes anyone who wants to be part of its society.
