Overview

It is an important date to reinforce the fight against all forms of racism and inequality in Brazil. This date refers to the approval of the first Brazilian law that criminalized racism, in 1951, representing a historic milestone in the defense of equal rights. Despite legal and institutional advances over the decades, the black population and other racialized groups still face structural barriers in accessing education, health, the job market and spaces of power, in addition to suffering from everyday violence and prejudice. It is important to remember that the same legislation that protects against racism also covers the protection of foreigners against discrimination based on nationality, origin or ethnicity. In other words, migrants and refugees living in Brazil are also protected by this law when they face xenophobia or any form of prejudice. Recognizing and confronting these inequalities is an essential step in building a more fair, egalitarian and respectful society for everyone.
