Overview

Starting September 2, 2025, the U.S. Department of State will require an in-person interview for all nonimmigrant visa applicants, including children under age 14 and seniors over age 79, who were previously typically exempt from this step. The exception remains only for categories such as diplomatic visas, officials, employees of international organizations, NATO military personnel and renewals of B‑1/B‑2 visas within 12 months of previous validity and that meet specific criteria. The change represents the end of the simplified regime and the system known as "dropbox", widely used during the pandemic, and reflects a stricter migration control policy. This also includes students, professionals and travelers who must prepare for possible delays and limited hours at consulates.
