Overview
The Chamber of Deputies has just approved a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution that brings significant changes to the way Brazilian citizenship is treated when another nationality is obtained, that is, dual citizenship. The legal text has already passed through the Chamber and the Senate, now awaiting presidential promulgation. According to the new rule, the loss of Brazilian citizenship will only occur in two circumstances: - When there is an explicit request from the individual, except in situations that could result in statelessness (when someone is not recognized as a citizen by any country). - When a court ruling orders the loss of citizenship due to fraud related to the naturalization process or actions against the constitutional order and the democratic state.
