Overview
For those who still cannot marry in their home countries because of discrimination, Brazil offers hope. It is possible for LGBTQIA+ couples to come to Brazil to celebrate their love or celebrate their wedding remotely (by proxy), if one or both of them cannot travel at the moment. Since May 2013, the Brazilian legal system has legally recognized marriage between individuals of the same gender. This decision brought immense joy and relief to countless LGBTQIA+ couples seeking the rights and recognition they deserve to form a family. Understanding the challenges faced by people who are currently unable to travel to Brazil, the country's legal system allows marriage to be celebrated by proxy. This provision allows one or both partners, through proxies, during the marriage qualification process and ceremony, to get married. After the marriage is celebrated, the non-Brazilian spouse will have the right to apply for a residence permit so that the couple can live in Brazil regularly.
