Overview

The Agreement between Brazil and Uruguay deals with permanent residence authorization with the aim of promoting the free movement of people between the two countries. Signed in Brasília on July 9, 2013, and approved by the Brazilian National Congress on December 19, 2016, the agreement waives the requirement for a prior period of temporary residence and exempts them from administrative fees and fines. Furthermore, the agreement allows exemption from translation and legalization of documents and legal protections permanent residents the right to move, reside and work under the same conditions as nationals of the receiving country. The Agreement also provides for the exchange of information and monitoring of its implementation by the Working Subgroup on Free Movement of Persons, promoting integration and regional development between Brazil and Uruguay.
