The end of the expression of interest for immigrants in Portugal marks a significant change in the country's immigration policy. Previously, tourists arriving without a residence visa could apply for a residence permit through this process, but the Portuguese government identified that this was overloading the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), leading to delays and operational problems. In response, the SEF was abolished and the Agency for Immigration and Mobility (AIMA) was created, becoming responsible for registering residence applications, which can now only be made by those who already arrive in Portugal with a residence visa, making the process more controlled and efficient.
