Overview
The Portuguese government has started a process of notifying foreigners in an irregular situation to leave the country voluntarily within 20 days. This measure affects those who had their application for residence denied and is part of a new migration policy to tighten the rules for entry and stay in Portugal. One of the main changes is the requirement for an employment contract to enter the country, ending the mechanism known as "expression of interest", which previously allowed immigrants to be regularized after one year of social security contributions. If they do not meet the deadline established for departure, immigrants may be expelled. The immigrant may consider the feasibility of administrative or judicial action to try to reverse the decision if there was an error in the decision, if they do have the documents and meet the necessary requirements.
