When a Brazilian citizen faces problems abroad, the first instance of support is consular assistance, offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This assistance is intended for situations in which Brazilians are unable to resolve problems on their own, such as health-related difficulties, lack of family members or problems obtaining essential documents. Consular assistance is a right structured by international treaties, and is free of cost for the citizen. Among the services provided are the issuance of passports, emergency financial aid, legal and psychological support, defense against discrimination and even repatriation.
