Overview
When one of the parents is a foreigner and a Brazilian child is born, the birth registration must be done at the Brazilian consulate located in the country where the birth occurred. This registration is essential to assurance the child's Brazilian nationality and can be carried out upon presentation of the supporting records by the consulate. Furthermore, it is still necessary to register the consular certificate in Brazil. If it is possible to add more guardians as father/mother on the birth certificate later, this can be done through the recognition of socio-affective parenting. This process can be done extrajudicially to add the name to the child's birth certificate, as long as there is consensus between everyone involved and there is no challenge from third parties.
