Overview
This date aims to remember those who died due to discrimination and raise awareness in society about the importance of respecting sexual and gender diversity, in addition to combating discrimination and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people. The date was chosen in reference to the decision by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 1990, to remove homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, a measure that reflects the scientific understanding that sexuality is a natural and intrinsic aspect of the human condition, and is not a pathology. Today, science widely recognizes gender identity and sexual diversity as legitimate realities, supported by studies in different areas, such as psychology, biology and neuroscience, which prove the complexity and naturalness of these experiences. Therefore, everyone must combat homophobia and ensure that all people, regardless of their identity or orientation, can live with dignity, equality and without fear of discrimination.
