Overview

In the historic town of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, an unusual and captivating Carnival tradition draws tourists from around the world: the Bloco da Lama (Mud Block). A bloco, which is a group of revelers parading through the streets with music and dancing, takes a unique twist here as participants cover themselves from head to toe in mud from nearby mangroves. This tradition began in the 1980s when a group of friends playfully smeared themselves with mud during Carnival and paraded through the streets. Since then, it has become an annual event.
