If two Brazilians or a Brazilian and a foreigner are getting married abroad, it will be important to obtain this document from the consulate that serves the region. Under Brazilian legislation, marriages celebrated by foreign authorities are recognized as valid, ensuring that Brazilian citizens married abroad have their marital status also recognized in Brazil. Any inconsistency in declaring marital status, such as falsely claiming to be single when married, can result in serious legal consequences.
